Dr. Luís Bacalhau

Over more than two decades of clinical activity, Dr. Luís Bacalhau has built a career dedicated to oral surgery, implantology and oral rehabilitation, marked by continuous training, international experience and an integrated vision of dental medicine.

Founder and Clinical Director of Gambelas Smile Clinic, he believes that each treatment should result from the combination of scientific knowledge, technological innovation and a trusting relationship built with each patient. This philosophy has accompanied his clinical practice since the beginning of his career and continues to guide the work of the whole clinic team every day.

Since the foundation of Gambelas Smile Clinic in 2010, he has led the growth of a project that currently brings together a multidisciplinary team of twenty professionals. The objective remains unchanged: to offer high-quality dental medicine care, where different specialities work in an integrated way to provide personalised, predictable and long-lasting solutions.

In parallel, he served for more than ten years as Clinical Coordinator of the Dental Medicine Department of the HPA Saúde Group, an experience that allowed him to develop skills in clinical leadership, team organisation and strategic development of oral health services.

An international journey that shaped his clinical vision

After completing the Degree in Dental Medicine at Egas Moniz School of Health & Science in 2005, Dr. Luís Bacalhau decided to begin an important stage of his career in the United Kingdom.

More than working abroad, he sought to learn about different healthcare delivery models, develop clinical autonomy and work with highly specialised teams.

Between 2006 and 2009 he practised in private clinics in Hampshire and London, deepening his skills in restorative dentistry, oral surgery and oral rehabilitation.

During this period he also joined the Community Dental Service of Wandsworth Primary Care Trust (NHS), a unit specialised in treating patients with special needs who, due to the complexity of their medical, physical or cognitive conditions, could not receive care in a conventional clinic setting.

The follow-up of these patients, often using conscious sedation and general anaesthesia, was a particularly significant experience, reinforcing the importance of rigorous planning, multidisciplinary collaboration and adapting each treatment to each person's individual needs.

In parallel, he attended training programmes at some of the most prestigious institutions in the United Kingdom, including the Eastman Dental Institute, Royal London Hospital, St George's Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital, deepening his knowledge in fixed prosthodontics, radiology, occlusion, restorative dentistry and treatment planning.

This international experience continues to influence his clinical practice today, based on rigour, predictability of treatments and continuous improvement.

The creation of Gambelas Smile Clinic

The return to Portugal coincided with the wish to create his own project.

In 2010 he founded Gambelas Smile Clinic with a very clear vision: to bring together different areas of dental medicine in one space, promoting an integrated, collaborative approach centred on each patient's needs.

Over the years, this project evolved into a multidisciplinary team made up of dentists, oral hygienists and assistants dedicated to the various areas of dental medicine, keeping unchanged the principles that were at its origin: closeness, permanent scientific updating, technological innovation and a commitment to the quality of care.

Continuous training as a professional commitment

The search for knowledge has always been part of Dr. Luís Bacalhau's journey.

After his degree, he deepened his training in Oral Implantology through the University of Seville, where he successively completed the Specialised Training Diploma in Dental Implantology, the Expert programme in Advanced Oral Implantology and the Master's degree in Oral Implantology.

However, completing the master's degree was just another step.

Over the years he continued to regularly invest in advanced training in bone regeneration, advanced surgery, digital implantology, mucogingival reconstruction, periodontal plastic surgery and aesthetic oral rehabilitation.

He attended international programmes in Portugal, Spain, Hungary and Brazil, including the Advanced Surgical Master Curriculum in Regenerative Implant Dentistry at the University of Szeged and training given by some of the most recognised professionals in contemporary implantology.

This permanent updating allows him to integrate new techniques and technologies critically, safely and supported by the best available scientific evidence.

An integrated approach to treatment

Throughout his career, Dr. Luís Bacalhau has accompanied thousands of patients with very different clinical needs.

He believes that no treatment should be viewed in isolation. Each patient has their own characteristics, requiring a rigorous diagnosis, individualised planning and, often, collaboration between different areas of dental medicine.

In his clinical practice he favours predictable, minimally invasive solutions focused on lasting results, combining function, aesthetics and long-term stability.

Technology today plays a decisive role in modern dental medicine, but it remains just a tool. The deciding factor remains clinical knowledge, accumulated experience and the ability to truly understand each patient's needs.

Despite the experience accumulated over more than twenty years of clinical activity, Dr. Luís Bacalhau continues to face each case as an opportunity to learn and evolve.
